Most consider it the most prominent landmark of Bandon, Oregon; others may say it’s the cheese. The light was built in 1896 at the mouth of the Coquille River to guide ships by the jetty. Around the turn of the twentieth century Bandon was the busiest port between the Columbia River and San Francisco. The light is named after the river and the local Coquille Indian tribe, where coquille is French, basically meaning scalloped shaped shell.

It was a bit of a challenge to create a scene at least somewhat different from the many excellent photographs and paintings already made. I’ve looked at the light from every vantage point I could, except from the sea, and simply found this view the post pleasant for me. Sometimes you become so familiar with something that it becomes a cliché in your own mind and you need to actively work to find a fresh view to reenergize your feelings. I think it’s most always worth it.
